Elizabeth Cook (COUNTRY/HONKY TONK)
For fans of the Florida-born’n’raised Cook, a Grand Ole Opry regular, SiriusXM Outlaw Country hostess and David Letterman favorite, Exodus of Venus will be something of a shock. If she maintains the tang of her drawl, what emerges – beyond Cook’s always vibrant and vivid sense of detail – is a song cycle soaked in turpentine, musk and honey.
Dale Watson (HONKY TONK/COUNTRY)
Dale has flown the flag for classic honky-tonk for over two decades. He’s christened his brand of American roots “Ameripolitan” to differentiate it from current crop of Nashville-based pop country. The Alabama-born, Texas-raised Watson may be the hardest working entertainer today and is rapidly approaching legendary status. He is a country music maverick, a true outlaw who stands alongside Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and George Strait as one of the finest country singers and songwriters from the Lone Star State.
Eilen Jewell Band (FOLK/COUNTRY/ROCK)
The long time WMNF favorite whose music is perfectly situated at the crossroads between folk, country and rock. As hard as it is to categorize Jewell’s music—terms like alt-country, roots-rock, country-noir, and Americana get used a lot—it’s even harder not to become thoroughly enraptured by the singer/songwriter’s powerful versatility, musical stories, and images. And that gorgeous voice makes you feel like she’s singing just for you, out on the breezy back porch or by a crackling campfire. She does so much, so well.
The Whiskey Gentry (GRIT/COUNTRY)
Hailing from Atlanta, The Whiskey Gentry has been described as a “toe-tappi
Sara Rose Band (COUNTRY/AMERICANA)
Hailing from Tampa Bay, this ensemble specializes in the kind of pre-1980 country and Western swing material made famous by stars the likes of Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams, and George Jones. Fronted by pint-sized vocal powerhouse Sara Rose, the group (2014 Best Roots/Alt-Country Band Runner Up, Creative Loafing’s Best Of The Bay Awards) has been building a growing fan base through well-received performances at venues across Tampa Bay such as Skipper’s Smokehouse, The Ale & The Witch, The Amsterdam, The New World Brewery, and The State Theatre. In 2015, the Sara Rose band made its debut at the Florida Strawberry Festival
