The 2017 International Blues Challenge (IBC) is January 31st to February 4th, 2017 in Memphis, Tennessee and is held at venues located along historic Beale Street. The International Showcase opens the event on January 31 followed by 2 rounds of IBC quarter-finals on February 1st and 2nd, semi-finals on February 3rd, and concludes with finalists performing at the Orpheum Theater on February 4th.
Each Affiliate of The Blues Foundation has the right to send a band and a solo/duo act to represent its blues society from around the world at the IBCs. This year over 120 bands and over 100 solo/duo acts will compete. Additionally, over 35 youth bands will also be “show cased”.
Skipper’s “Going to the IBCs Fundraiser” supports 2 local bands on their trip to Memphis to compete in the 2017 International Blues Challenge: Souliz representing the Suncoast Blues Society (Tampa), and, the David Smash Band representing the Orange Blossom Blues Society (Orlando). There will be a 50/50 and items raffled off. Both bands will perform along with TC Carr and Johnny G. Lyon as their musical guests.
Souliz (BLUES) – Suncoast Blues Society Entry
Souliz Is A Tampa, Florida Based R&B, Southern Soul, Blues And Classic Rock-N-Roll Band Which Combines A Truly Unique Blend Of Musical Styles. Although An Excellent Band In Its Own Right, The Souliz Biggest Attractions Are Its Two Featured Female Vocalist: Myra Glover (Mama Sugar) And Velma Glover (Cajun Spice). Raised In Such A Musical Atmosphere, It Comes As No Surprise That Both Myra And Velma Are Natural Performers.
David Smash (BLUES) – Orange Blossom Blues Society Entry
David Smash is a Lithuanian born musician, composer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s has been in United States only since 2012. David has appeared on national television in Lithuania such as “Lithuania’s Got Talent 2009”, “Ring of Young Talents 2010”, “Lithuania’s Pick for Eurovision 2011” and has headlined major music festivals in Lithuania and Poland – “Visagino Country 2010”, “Bliuzo Naktys 2010”, “Wegorzewo 2011”, and “Most Rockowy 2010”. The David Smash Band last year competed at the International Blues Challenge 2016 and made it into the semi-finals. In February 2017 he’ll be representing the Orange Blossom Blues Society (Orlando FL) at the IBCs in Memphis TN for the 2nd time. The David Smash Band is an unforgettable experience in musical showmanship and guitar artistry. With his uncommon seven string guitar and original style of contemporary, blues, rock, jazz, country and ethnic styles all put into one, The David Smash Band leaves you coming back for more.
