Johnny G Lyon / JGLB, with special guests Danny Roberts and Rob Stoney, appear at Skipper’s Smokehouse in Tampa, Friday Nov 10 2023 at 8 PM.
Danny Roberts was there with Tom Petty at the very beginning. Danny spent much of the early 1970s working with Tom Petty in the legendary band “Mudcrutch,” from Gainesville, Florida. During these years, Danny wrote some songs with Tom Petty, as they toured around Florida.
In 1974, Tom, Danny and Mudcrutch went out to to Los Angeles to get a record deal. They experienced many of the things that happen to a rock and roll band in these kinds of situations. To a significant degree, the rest is well known history.
Danny went on to do a lot of great work with a lot of other highly respected artists. He toured three years with Derek Trucks. He’s also worked in the studio with some real legendary hitmakers like Billy Joe Royal, former “Atlanta Rythym Section” drummer/writer Robert Nix, the late Phil Seymour, and of course Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench and Randall Marsh. Danny still performs live. Just last weekend (Oct 20-22 2023), Danny played at the “Tom Petty Weekend” Festival in Gainesville. But Danny’s got his own thing going, he’s much more than just “a guy who used to play with Tom Petty.”
Rob Stoney is a hitmaking songwriter whose music has appeared on the national charts. He’s toured nationally with The Warren Brothers and has also been a mainstay of the legendary Greg Billings Band. He has become one of the most respected entertainers in the Tampa Bay area.
Johnny G Lyon / JGLB plays rock and roll. They’ve been around so long, people who were born on the day they started are now grandparents. But JGLB started playing at Skipper’s Smokehouse in 1985, and JGLB still plays at Skipper’s, so either JGLB is doing something right, or Skipper’s just hasn’t figured out that they ought to get rid of JGLB! But i’m supposed to be writing good stuff about JGLB, so please assume the former is true.
Danny, Rob, and Johnny G Lyon have known each other for 40-50 years and have successfully worked together in different settings. So they know what they’re getting into here! Look for mayhem. And Skipper’s is the perfect place for it.
